The Olin B. and Desta Schwab Foundation is funding participation opportunities for northeast Indiana high school students to compete in the CyberPatriot National High School Cyber Defense Competition. CyberPatriot is the premier national high school cyber defense competition created to inspire high school students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The competition was conceived by the Air Force Association, and national outreach was made possible by Northrop Grumman.
The Foundation partnered with the Northeast Indiana Air Force Association Chapter to visit area high schools to explain the competition and sign up teams. Five teams are representing northeast Indiana:
- Anthis Career Center - Allen County
- Auburn Cadet Squadron (Civil Air Patrol) - DeKalb County
- Bellmont High School in Decatur - Adams County
- Garrett High School - DeKalb County
- The Howe School (Army Junior ROTC) - LaGrange County
“Our Northeast Indiana Air Force Association members are very excited about this year's competition,” said Paul A. Lyons, president of the Indiana State Air Force Association, “and wish all five teams the best of luck.”
The competition has a tournament-style tiered structure with a series of web-based competition rounds culminating in the national championship in Washington, D.C. in March 2012. The Auburn Cadet Squadron and the Howe Army JROTC Squadron will compete in the all-service division. Their Round One will be held October 28 and 29. The Anthis Career Center, Bellmont High School and Garrett High School will compete in the open division. Their Round One will be held November 4 and 5.
“We are proud to have five teams represent northeast Indiana in this year’s competition and be involved in this fun and educational experience. It introduces them to a career track they can follow through college by studying STEM disciplines that can eventually lead to an exciting, in-demand career,” said Jim Johnston, Olin B. and Desta Schwab Foundation board president.
